Food calculators for every party

Quick rule: plan about 1 to 1.5 pounds of food per adult for a full meal — one main, roughly 1/3 lb of sides, and a dessert. Pick a calculator below to turn your guest count into exact package counts and a print-ready shopping list.

Party table filled with food

Quick answer: how much food for a party?

For a full meal, plan 1 main serving per adult, about 1/3 lb of side dishes per person, 2 to 3 drinks per person every two hours, and 1 dessert per guest. Children usually need smaller food portions, while cups, plates and napkins stay close to one per guest. Use the party food calculator per person for a complete menu, or a single-item tool below when you only need one number.

These are starting points. The calculators below convert them into real store units — bags, trays, packs and bottles — for your exact guest mix, event length and meal style.

Choosing the right tool

Planning the whole menu? Use the party food calculator per person — it estimates mains, sides, drinks, dessert and supplies together and turns them into one shopping list. Only need one item? Open its single-item calculator (meat, BBQ sides, pizza, sandwiches, pasta, burgers, hot dogs, chili, fruit or charcuterie) for a faster, focused answer.

For a pizza-focused event, start with the pizza party calculator for any headcount, then jump to the party guides for fixed 20- and 40-person ordering answers. For drinks, see the drink calculators. For holidays, see seasonal parties.

How the food estimates work

Every calculator uses standard catering serving sizes, adjusted for three things: who is eating (adults, teens, children), how long the event runs, and meal style (full meal, buffet, snacks or appetizers). A four-hour party simply needs more than a one-hour drop-in. The methodology page explains the per-person assumptions behind each number and where they shift — for example, sides shrink when pizza is the main, and kids' portions are smaller even though their cup and plate counts stay close to one each.

Quantities are practical planning estimates, not nutritional or medical advice. Real consumption varies with appetite, weather and event flow, so we offer Conservative, Standard and Generous serving levels you can switch between.
